What is Airway Dentistry?

Airway dentistry is a specialized field that examines how the structure and function of your mouth, jaw, and airway influence your ability to breathe, particularly while sleeping. Restricted airflow can lead to a range of health problems—chronic fatigue, frequent headaches, jaw pain, and even increased risk for heart disease. An underdeveloped jaw, tongue tie, or improper tongue posture can interfere with speech, facial growth, concentration, and overall development in children.

Rather than simply treating symptoms, Dr. Mitchell uses advanced diagnostic tools to assess airway size and function. This process may include imaging technology, sleep assessments, and a detailed health history review. We customize treatment plans, including oral appliances, orthodontic growth guidance, habit correction, or coordinated care with medical specialists for optimal results.

Signs You Might Need Airway Dentistry

Breathing issues aren’t always obvious. Many experience symptoms for years without realizing the connection to airway problems.

Signs in Adults:

  • Persistent fatigue or brain fog despite getting “enough” sleep
  • Loud snoring, gasping, or waking up short of breath
  • Frequent morning headaches, jaw discomfort, or teeth grinding
  • Neck, shoulder, or back pain related to poor posture
  • Mood swings, anxiety, or difficulty focusing during the day

Signs in Children:

  • Habitual mouth breathing, even while awake
  • Snoring or noisy breathing during sleep
  • Restless nights, frequent bedwetting, or night terrors
  • Forward head posture or elongated facial growth
  • Attention challenges or behavioral concerns in school
  • Crowding of teeth or bite misalignment

Recognizing these signs early—especially in children—can significantly improve treatment success and long-term health.

Our Step-by-Step Approach to Airway Health

Dr. Mitchell’s approach to airway dentistry is comprehensive and personalized, aiming to manage symptoms and improve quality of life through better breathing.

  1. Comprehensive Evaluation – We start with an in-depth health history, clinical examination, and advanced imaging to evaluate jaw structure, bite alignment, and airway space.
  2. Early Intervention for Children – We use growth guidance techniques and oral appliances to encourage proper jaw development, helping prevent more serious problems later in life.
  3. Therapy for Adults – Airway-friendly oral appliances are designed to keep the airway open during sleep, often in collaboration with sleep physicians to treat conditions like sleep apnea.
  4. Habit Correction – We provide education on nasal breathing and correct tongue posture, and can refer patients to myofunctional therapy to strengthen oral muscles and improve function.
  5. Ongoing Monitoring – Regular follow-up visits ensure progress and treatment plans are adjusted as needed.

The Life-Changing Benefits of Better Breathing

Addressing airway health can have a ripple effect throughout your life. Adults often experience deeper, more restorative sleep, increased energy, fewer headaches, and improved mental clarity. Children may see mood, behavior, school performance, and facial development improvements. Since breathing affects every system in the body, better airway function can improve cardiovascular health, immune function, and emotional well-being.

Exceptional care and attention to detail. While this is only the temporary crown I am very pleased with how the procedure went. Barely 24 hours later and it feels as if it is one of my own teeth. There was zero pain during the procedure as well as now which is barely 24 hours later with no need to even consider taking any form of pain relief. So impressed with Dr. Mitchell and her staff!
